SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga, Philippines -- Three groups of protesters picketed the Pampanga capitol compound as some 500 people, led by Gov. Eddie Panlilio, waited for Liberal Party standard bearer Sen. Benigno Aquino III and his running mate, Sen. Manuel Roxas II, on Monday.
The protesters -– Hacienda Luisita farm workers, supporters of Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard bearer Gilbert Teodoro Jr. and dismissed quarry workers in Pampanga -- stood on Arnedo Park, some 50 meters from the capitol.
The 15 or so Luisita farm workers had their faces covered with shirts and declined interviews or to give their names. No leader came forward to talk to reporters.
Their placards were made of sack, begging justice for the deaths of seven workers during a clash among striking workers, soldiers and policemen on Nov. 16, 2004, at Hacienda Luisita.
Supporters of Teodoro displayed their placards, most of which said: “GMA country's Gibo country.”
The placards came in apple green, the signature color of Teodoro.
The noisiest protesters were former workers of the Balas (Biyaya a Luluguran at Sisikapan), tasked with monitoring the sand quarrying industry in the province. Panlilio dismissed them for holding a strike in July 2008.
One of the former workers shouted that the LP made a mistake in choosing Panlilio as provincial chair of the party.
Panlilio quietly watched the protesters who were kept at bay by about 10 policemen.
When the party of Aquino and Roxas came at 1:30 p.m., the supporters of Panlilio erupted in applause and cheers and drowned the voices of the protesters.
Aquino, Roxas and some members of the LP senatorial slate, headed straight to the governor's office for lunch.
