SAN PEDRO, Laguna – Nearly 30 towns in Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, and Cavite provinces were without electricity Saturday morning as typhoon “Santi” (international codename: Mirinae) snapped power lines during its passage across the Calabarzon region during the night, officials said.

Vicente Tomazar, Calabarzon Regional Disaster Coordinating Council director, said 14 municipalities in Laguna, five in Quezon and five in Rizal had no electricity.

Senior Superintendent Alfred Corpus, Cavite police director, said four towns in Cavite were also experiencing brownouts.

There were no reports of damaged electric posts. We just hope this is for safety reasons," Tomazar said of the power outages.

Thousands left their homes late Friday afternoon following a government order for a preemptive evacuation especially of people living in areas prone to landslides and floods.

The Calabarzon RDCC said a total of 80,807 persons evacuated in Rizal province; 758 in Quezon; and 1,155 in Laguna.

They were all brought to at least 200 evacuation centers.

In Cavite, 979 persons reportedly evacuated their homes in Cavite City, Cavite police chief Corpus.

At the Malaban Elementary School, which serves as an evacuation center for tropical storm “Ondoy” (international codename: Ketsana) flood victims in Biñan, Laguna, the flood waters that had slowly receded by a few centimeters a few days ago, rose again due to the rains brought by Santi, said Girlie Leyva, an evacuee.
