MANILA, Philippines—A businessman was shot dead with his own gun by the very intruder he caught on his property early Friday morning in Balintawak, Quezon City.
The victim, identified as Rogelio de Dios, 53, was shot at around 2:10 a.m. in his compound, where he rents out several units to tenants, on A. Bonifacio St., Barangay Pag-ibig sa Nayon, Balintawak.
Case investigator Joselito Gagaza of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said the assailant was an unidentified male trespasser, described by a witness as wearing a mask, about 20-25 years old, of slim build and between 5’2” to 5’3”.
Gagaza said De Dios was shot right outside his house after he and the intruder grappled for control of the victim’s .9 mm Taurus pistol.
Investigation showed that while De Dios kept his eye on the intruder who was wandering inside his compound, he roused his live-in partner Susanito Torino from sleep and told her to ask for assistance from his brother who lived nearby.
Torino, on her way to ask for help, heard two shots from her house, prompting her to rush back to check on De Dios.
She found De Dios lying bloodied on the pavement and told police that she also saw the unidentified man leaving the compound in a hurry with the gun.
The victim, who sustained two gunshot wounds in the head and on the left part of his body, was rushed to the Chinese General Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival by attending doctor Stewart Santos.
