MANILA, Philippines—Inter-island ferry service has resumed in some parts of Luzon, lessening the number of passengers in various ports, the Philippine Coast Guard said Saturday.

As typhoon Pepeng moved farther north, some ferry services, especially those in the Bicol region, have resumed operations in the last 24 hours.

Coast Guard spokesman Commander Armand Balilo said the number of passengers marooned in ports in Bicol and Southern Tagalog declined on Friday to 842 from over 3,000 last Thursday.

“Most of these stranded passengers are concentrated in Bicol,” Balilo said.

Of the 842 passengers, there were 219 people in Tabaco town in Albay; 30 in Pasacao, Camarines Sur; 17 in Pio Duran, Albay; 139 in Bulan, Sorsogon; and 228 people in Matnog, Sorsogon.

In the Southern Tagalog Region, there were still 142 stranded passengers in Lucena in Quezon and 67 in Puerto Real, also in Quezon.

Aside from passengers, the PCG also reported that there were over a hundred vehicles stranded in the Bicol region.

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, the PCG said the stranded trucks numbered 103.

There were also 35 cars, 45 passenger buses, five rolling cargoes, 15 vessels and 12 motorized bancas. There were also two vessels that took shelter.

Balilo said the Coast Guard has not received any report of a maritime disaster due to Pepeng.
