ILOILO CITY, Philippines—Hundreds of tourists bound for the island resort Boracay were stranded at the port of Caticlan after the Coast Guard suspended ferry boat trips due to strong winds brought by Typhoon Ondoy.
Lieutenant Godofredo Vagil, Coast Guard station chief in Malay, said in a telephone interview Saturday that several boats were allowed to travel when the weacay.
Trips of Roll-on, roll-off (Roro) ships from Caticlan to Oriental Mindoro were suspended, according to Vagil.
The vessels plying between Iloilo and Guimaras Island and Bacolod City were allowed to travel but Commodore William Melad, Coast Guard Commander in Western Visayas, said he directed Coast Guard stations to suspend trips if visibility is low and sea conditions worsen.
Several trips of passenger boats to from Iloilo to Bacolod were suspended in the afternoon due to rough seas.
