CEBU CITY, Philippines -- The Dancesport Team Cebu City (DTCC) will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest dance class in a bid to promote Cebu as the dance capital of the world, an official of the group said.

The DTCC will try to put bring together about 4,000 people for the dance class at the Cebu City Sports Center oval on June 27, DTCC head dance instructor Loloi Rendon said.

About 3,000 students of the Abellana National High School confirmed their participation in the world record attempt during a meeting Wednesday with public and private school teachers and principals and officials of the Department of Education in Cebu led by education superintendent Lorna E. Rances, Rendon said.

Led by couple Edward and Eleanor Hayco, the DTCC hopes to break the record set in Budapest, Hungary, last May 23, 2009, wherein 2,289 participated in a dance class. This broke the 1,830 record set in Moscow, Russia in 2007.

Edward Hayco said it would be a great honor for Cebu to beat Hungary, with European cities like Moscow and Budapest being bastions of dance, arts and culture.

"With this historic event, we feel it is the avenue or vehicle to propel us as the dance capital of the world because the countries that we are trying to beat are no ordinary countries, they are mystical, extraordinary countries because their countries are so deeply rich in history and culture. It is a great challenge and honor to be able to beat them," said Hayco.

The other schools that have signified their interest to participate were the Pardo National High School, Pardo Night High School, Inayawan Night High School, Gothong Night High School, Sawang Calero Elementary School, Regino Mercado National High School, Don Sergio Osmeña National High School, Tejero Night High School, Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion-Mandaue, Southwestern University, University of Southern Philippines, University of Cebu and University of San Carlos.

Rendon said he could not say the exact number of participants but he hoped the number would exceed 4,000.

"This is open to everybody who is interested to join our bid for a Guinness world record. We even have members of the Philippine National Police confirming their participation," he said.

He said the DTCC hoped to have a large number of participants so that the Philippines could hold the record for a long time.

The Guinness World Record Attempt requires 10 minutes of non-stop synchronized dancing. General rehearsals were scheduled on June 20 and 21 at the Cebu City Sports Center oval, he said.
