LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines--Heavy rains that started at about 1 a.m. Sunday caused floods in low-lying areas and coastal villages in Camarines Norte, with rivers already overflowing and affecting four routes.
Some 917 families have been evacuated as of 3 p.m., said the Office of Civil Defense-Bicol Sunday afternoon.
A weather bulletin from the weather bureau on Sunday said the tailend of a cold front was affecting Luzon with mostly cloudy skies and scattered rains becoming widespread rains over the eastern section of Southern Luzon, which could trigger flashfloods and landslides.
Routes affected by the overflowing rivers include the Vinzons to Labo-Sitio Contod along Banawang Creek and the Vinzons-Labo approach of Alinaw Creek.
The Labo to South Road-Sitio Mineral, Talobatib area was also experiencing chest level floodwaters, the report added.
Bernardo Alejandro, OCD Bicol director, said the Daet-Manila route was impassable as five bridges in the area had been washed out and underwater.
In the municipalities of Daet, Talisay, Basud, San Vicente, Mercedes and Vinzons, water supply has been cut off.
The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council in Camarines Norte, which has coordinated with the Army and police for support in the evacuation of the affected families, would monitor the situation for the next 24 hours, Alejandro added.
