MANILA, Philippines -- Workers digging a hole in San Mateo, Rizal, unearthed a unique vintage bomb last week, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said.
Agent Romeo Cotingjo of the NBI Anti-terrorism Division, described the bomb as a 500-pound, general-purpose “rocket bomb” that could cause a 500-square-meter crater.
"This bomb is very unique. In fact, since we retrieved it, we have been researching what type of bomb this is. This is the first time we have encountered this type of bomb. Given its old age, this bomb must have been very hi-tech at that time considering that it's rocket-assisted," said Cotingjo.
He said they retrieved the bomb following information construction workers in Purok (sub-village) 2, Barangay (Village) Butong Palay, San Mateo Rizal accidentally hit it while digging for a septic tank.
Cotingjo said the vintage bomb would be taken to Crow Valley in Camp O'Donnel in Capas, Tarlac for proper disposition.
