DIGOS CITY, Philippines—(UPDATE) An eight-year-old boy was declared missing after a flashflood, triggered by heavy rains, hit the village of Mana in Malita, Davao del Sur Thursday.

Malita Mayor Benjamin Bautista received reports of the boy’s disappearance as he said Mana became the latest village affected by the floods.

Earlier, at least 300 families fled to safer areas when floodwaters, as deep as one meter, submerged seven villages of Malita town in Davao del Sur shortly before noon Thursday, officials said.

Mudlsides also buried corn fields in some portions of the town.

Chief Superintendent Cesario Darantinao, provincial police chief, said property was damaged but no one was reported hurt in the villages of Sanghay, Pangalian, San Isidro, Tikal, Macol, Sabang and Poblacion.

"In the poblacion [town center] area, the waters submerged the vendors' display. They did not see it coming," Darantinao said.

Darantinao told the Philippine Daily Inquirer he had not yet received any report about the missing boy.

Engineer Noel Hubac, municipal disaster coordinating chief, said the flooding was triggered by torrential rains.

He said based on an initial assessment, a foot bridge and 47 houses were damaged by the floods.

Another report said a portion of the sea wall that protected coastal areas near the municipal hall also collapsed.

Hubac said initial estimates placed the damage at P20 million.

Malita Mayor Benjamin Bautista said he already ordered social welfare and health officials to attend to the needs of the displaced residents, who have been temporarily staying at the municipal gymnasium.

Bautista said because of the floods and the landslides, a state of calamity had already been declared in the affected villages.
