MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Public storm signal No. 2, meaning winds of from 60 to 100 kilometers per hour, has been raised over Cagayan and Isabela provinces and northern Aurora as the weather disturbance “Marce” turned into a tropical storm and headed for Northern Luzon.
In its 5 p.m. Monday advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has also raised signal No. 1, meaning winds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour, over the rest of Aurora, Polillo Island, Catanduanes, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Benguet, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Abra, Kalinga Apayao, the Babuyan and Batanes group of islands.
Marce was first reported as an active low pressure area early Monday morning and had strengthened into a tropical depression by noon.
At 4 p.m., PAGASA said Marce, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of 80 kilometers per hour, was 410 kilometers east of Casiguran Aurora and moving northwest at 15 kilometers per hour.
The storm is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Southern Luzon and Western Visayas.
Marce is forecast to be 150 kilometers northeast of Casiguran by Tuesday afternoon and 120 kilometers north of Vigan City by Wednesday afternoon.
By Thursday afternoon the storm is expected to be 450 kilometers north northwest of Vigan City.
