KORONADAL CITY, Philippines--An improvised bomb went off Saturday night near the house of a town mayor in North Cotabato and brother of North Cotabato Vice Governor Emmanuel Piñol, but no one was reported hurt.
Maj. Randolph Cabangbang, Eastern Mindanao command deputy spokesperson, said the bomb, fashioned from mortar shell and blasting cap, exploded around 8:45 p.m. Saturday on Daguhay Street, just a few meters away from the house of M'lang Mayor Joselito Piñol, eldest brother of the vice governor who has been vocal against a proposed pact on a Bangsamoro homeland.
"No one was hurt in the blast. Authorities are investigating the attack," Cabangbang said.
On Friday night, government bomb experts detonated a similar improvised bomb planted near the vice governor’s house.
Earlier on the same day, an explosive was discovered inside an elementary school in M'lang town, prompting school officials to cancel the classes of M'lang Central Pilot Elementary School and National High school.
On August 14, a powerful bomb was recovered at the public market in Kidapawan City and was immediately deactivated by explosives personnel. Several hours later, a suspected bomber was wounded when the improvised explosive device he was carrying exploded prematurely in M'lang town.
No one claimed responsibility for the incidents but vice governor Piñol earlier blamed the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
The series of incidents came days after soldiers and Moro rebels ended their clashes that displaced nearly 160,000 people in North Cotabato.
