DIGOS CITY, Philippines -- The provincial office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Davao del Sur has distributed fishing gear and fingerlings to small and medium-sized fishers in an effort to boost productivity.
Carlito Aclao, BFAR provincial officer, told reporters here on Friday that the assistance was part of the government's campaign to boost the aqua-culture industry in the province.
Last week, at least 500 fishermen were the latest to receive fishing gear and other forms of assistance, he said.
Aclao said they also distributed carp and tilapia fingerlings and bangus (milkfish) fry to backyard and commercial fishpond operators in the towns of Sta. Maria, Sulop, Hagonoy, Malalag, Padada, Sta. Cruz, Sarangani, and this city.
"The fishing paraphernalia given to the beneficiaries could mean a lot in the government's effort to have a sustainable supply of fish in the local market and help improve the economic status of the fishermen," Aclao said.
