LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines -- Two children were killed and another was injured when an explosive device went off Sunday in Villa Hermosa village in the island town of Rapu-Rapu, Albay province, about two hours' motorboat ride east of this city, a police official said Monday.
James Ryan Bonkay, 8, died on the spot, while Hong Yu Chen, 10-year-old son of a Taiwanese father and a Filipina mother, died at the Tabaco Hospital in mainland Albay where he was rushed for treatment.
According to reports received by Superintendent Joel Baloro, Albay provincial police director, Monday morning, another boy, Henry Buella Jr., 8, was also reported injured in the incident and was rushed to the Tabaco Hospital.
No further updates on the boy's status have been given.
Testimonies gathered from village officials said the children were playing near their houses in the village, when they apparently came upon the explosive device and decided to "play with it," Baloro said in a phone interview.
The exact type of explosive device has yet to be determined, but scene of the crime operatives have been sent to further investigate the incident.
