MANILA, Philippines ? The Department of Interior and Local Government on Friday urged every local government to come up with an ordinance that would increase the number of barangay tanod (village watchmen) to augment the police force as added security.
In a statement, Secretary Jesse Robredo said that under the Local Government Code of 1991, the number of watchmen in every village should not exceed 20. However, because of security needs, the official is pushing to increase the number of watchmen depending on the population of a city or municipality and the available resources it has to be able to provide for the salaries of these officials.
The move came after Robredo met with local officials of the cities of Manila, Pasay, Pasig, Caloocan, and Mandaluyong, including top officials of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).
The proposal came also in the wake of the recent bombing of a metro bus along Edsa in Makati City on Tuesday.
?Deputized watch groups should play a vital role in the enforcement of the law and in ensuring peace and order in every barangay,? Robredo said.
