MANILA, Philippines--Philippine Daily Inquirer editor in chief Letty Jimenez Magsanoc, in her speech commemorating the Inquirer?s 25th anniversary, recalled that ?when the paper first hit the streets the newsboys could not even pronounce it. So they called out ?bagong dyaryo, bagong dyaryo?.?
She said there was much work for the Inquirer to do, with the ?seemingly endless chasing after of the two big words: justice and freedom.?
At the time, ?there was the surge of dissent in the nation that could not be stopped. There was people power to stand the world, and there was history to be made,? she said, referring to that part in the Inquirer?s history after Ninoy Aquino was assassinated on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport on Aug. 21, 1983.
She concluded by saying that it was no coincidence that the Inquirer was celebrating its 25th with Ninoy?s worthy heir and son, President Benigno ?Noynoy? Aquino III.
