MANILA, Philippines?President Aquino?s first foreign trip would probably take him to Indonesia instead of to the US, a presidential spokesperson told reporters on Friday.
Secretary Ricky Carandang of the presidential communications group said the trip to Indonesia has also yet to be finalized.
?But if is finalized, it would take place before the trip to the US,? Carandang said.
Mr. Aquino is scheduled to attend the United Nations general assembly in September.
The President mentioned another possible third-party facilitator, aside from Malaysia, in the government?s peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
He, however, declined to name the country because he has yet to talk with its head of state.
Mr. Aquino is expected to meet Indonesian Prime Minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his trip to Jakarta.
?(Malaysia staying on as the third party in the peace process) would not be our decision alone. This is either a bilateral or even trilateral (decision),? Mr. Aquino said in a news briefing in Malacañang on Wednesday.
?This will be the subject of discussion with both Malaysian government and possible other entities who can become the third party. So, at this point in time, they are still in the nascent stages,? Mr. Aquino added.
Pressed which country he was considering as mediator in the talks, the President said he?d rather make the announcement when he has already talked with its leader.
?In as much as I will broach the idea to the head of state, perhaps it will be better if I talk to him first before announcing it,? Mr. Aquino said.
