MANILA, Philippines? Two more health workers being held on suspicion they were communist rebels have been transferred to another jail, the husband of one of the so-called ?Morong 43? said Wednesday.
According to Romeo Clamor, soldiers ?segregated? Jennylyn Pizarro and John Mark Barrientos from the group of community health workers who were rounded up from a resort compound in Morong, Rizal in February.
In an interview, Clamor said the pair was moved to an undisclosed location almost a week ago on orders of a certain Colonel Zaragoza.
?It?s possible that the military would surface them in the next few days and make them admit that they were NPA (New People?s Army) rebels,? he said.
Clamor, whose wife Dr. Merry Mia, was among the two doctors arrested with the group, accused the military of using the ?divide and conquer? rule by forcing the detainees to turn against their fellow health workers.
He noted that three detainees?Valentine Paulino, Eleonor Carandang and Cherrielyn Tawagon?were also relocated to another jail facility before they confessed being communist rebels.
?We fear that (Pizarro and Barrientos) were tortured just to accede to what the military wants them to do,? he said.
Clamor also accused the Army unit holding the health workers of using the detainees? families to force them to follow their orders.
He questioned the propriety of bringing Carandang?s four children who were allegedly fetched by soldiers from their house in Lopez, Quezon.
The children are now staying with Carandang inside Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal, according to Clamor.
Colonel Noel Detoyato, spokesman of the Army?s 2nd Infantry Division, confirmed that Pizarro and Barrientos have been taken to another detention center.
He said the two also admitted that they belonged to an NPA unit operating in Quezon province.
Both also owned up to being part of an NPA team trained as medics, he claimed.
But Detoyato belied accusations that they subjected the five detainees to physical torture to coerce them to confess about their involvement in the armed communist rebellion.
?It was their decision to have a new life and leave the NPA. We just supported their decision,? he said.
He also said that Carandang requested her military captors to bring her children to her in Camp Capinpin.
Detoyato said Pizarro and Barrientos have already replaced human rights lawyer Romeo Capulong as counsel and instead hired the services of a certain Cyrus Jurado.
