MANILA, Philippines ? Malacañang on Sunday thanked Manny Pacquiao for his latest victory in what could be the last boxing match the people's champ would be taking part in under the outgoing Arroyo administration.
Since President Macapagal Arroyo took power in 2001, Pacquaio had taken part in 24 fights, scoring victories over boxing greats that united the country.
President Arroyo had been supportive of Pacquaio, who in turn had called for national unity during the height of controversies in the Arroyo administration.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Gary Olivar said the country was once again ``united in prayer and support'' behind Pacquaio and hoped ``this same unity will see us through as we open yet another chapter in our nation's history.''
``Together with a proud nation, we thank you Manny, for giving us a reason to join hands as we reach the crossroads of history,'' said Olivar in a statement, as he pointed out that the country would go to the polls in May to vote to choose its next leaders.
``We need to muster the same courage and strength that Manny Pacquiao exemplified, in order to rise above the politics of hate and fear. This is the only way we can rightfully choose the leaders who are up to the challenges of our time,'' he said.
Olivar expressed Malacañang?s faith in the ability of the people to ``make the right choice?the same way that we showed once again our faith in our champion?s ability in the ring.''
