Ex-broadcaster laments stingy media coverage

MANILA, Philippines? In his attempt to cross over from broadcasting to politics, former television reporter and now senatorial candidate Alex Tinsay is experiencing what he admits as a not-exactly-fair media coverage of the election campaign.

Sought for his observation of how the media have been covering the campaign, Tinsay said: ?It is very evident that Villar, Noynoy and Gibo are getting the lion?s share of media coverage.?

Tinsay, who is running under the Bangon Pilipinas Party of presidential candidate Eddie Villanueva, was referring to presidential aspirants Manny Villar, Benigno ?Noynoy? Aquino and Gilbert Teodoro.

How we work

He said: ?This is not surprising. That is really how we work in the media.?

Tinsay lamented that poll survey results could also be affecting the judgment of media organizations on which candidates to cover.

But he was quick to add that some news organizations still air stories and publish articles about the party and its candidates.

He also said that contrary to what poll surveys claim, Villanueva and his candidates are getting overwhelming support in the towns they visit.

He said: ?I feel strongly that we should do something to stop the surveys which are deceiving our people.?

Big booster

In a press conference in Quezon City on Friday, dermatologist Vinson Pineda expressed his support for Tinsay?s candidacy and to the other candidates of Bangon Pilipinas. Pineda owns Dermclinic, a chain of 21 dermatology clinics in the country.

Pineda, an evangelist of the Light of the World Church, said that God could return the country to its old glory.

But he said: ?God can only reign in the country if people who fear God will be the ones who will run the country.?

Pineda also urged other businessmen to be vocal about supporting candidates. He said many businessmen were apprehensive about openly throwing support to particular candidates because ?they are intimidated by the powers at work at the moment.?

Pineda said aside from publicly announcing his support for Villanueva and his party, he would also financially support the campaign by helping in the printing of campaign materials.

During the press conference, Tinsay, a former GMA 7 reporter, promised reforms to help the media if he wins as senator.

He lamented that some journalists earn meager salaries and only through commission basis. He promised to help improve wages for journalists if he wins.
