MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) should put an end to its practice of adopting politicians as part of insulating the military from politics, a congressman said Friday.
Muntinlupa Representative Rufino Biazon said the military and pilice establishments should be shielded from politics at all times.
"The practice of Philippine Military Academy classes from adopting politicians should be prohibited in order to prevent politization of the military and the PNP as well as eradicate the bata-bata and palakasan system," said Biazon, a senatorial candidate of the Liberal Party.
Biazon said the practice of adoption has raised suspicions that some PMA classes were being favored by politicians in power, whom they have adopted.
"It has also led officers of the AFP and PNP to be partisan towards an adopted mistah," he added.
"Whether these issues are true or not, the practice clearly does not contribute to the insulation of the military and police from politics. It is therefore necessary to stop the practice to ensure that there is no avenue for familiarization between politicians and officers of the military and police," Biazon said in a statement.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and several candidates running for president for the May election have been adopted members of various PMA classes.
Arroyo is an adopted member of the PMA 78 class, where Lieutenant General Delfin Bangit belongs.
Arroyo has named Bangit as the new chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
