MANILA, Philippines? The Food and Drugs Administration has found more Chinese beauty and slimming products that contain dangerously high levels of harmful substances such as mercury and steroids.
The regulatory agency, in an advisory dated February 9, warned the public about three mercury-tainted cosmetic products and two steroids-laced slimming preparations. It specifically warned against buying Zhen de Shou Fat Loss Capsule and Zhen de Shou Fat Loss Tea since these are not registered and therefore are being illegally sold in the market.
?Worse, laboratory examinations show that samples of Zhen de Shou Fat Loss Capsules contain as their ingredients amphetamine, sibutramine or steroids, either singly or in combination with each other," said FDA Director Nazarita Tacandong.
?Not being registered, it is illegal for the above products to contain such ingredients. Furthermore consumers can be put (in) imminent danger or injury when using such products," she added.
Tacandong warned retail outlets and other establishments against selling such products or they ?will be penalized severely."
The FDA has the power to confiscate products that it finds to be injurious to public safety.
The agency also reiterated a warning it issued last month against Jiaoli Miraculous Cream, Jiaoli Hulchusu Special Cut Genuine and Jiaoli 2+17 Days Clearing Facial Spots Suit.
Tacandong said these products are not only not registered but they also contain the heavy metal mercury beyond the allowable limit of one part per million.
?Cosmetic products containing such impurities/contaminants that are way beyond the allowable limit clearly pose imminent danger or injury to the consuming public," she said in her Feb. 9 advisory
Tacandong actually issued the same warning against the three Jiaoli products in a public advisory last January.
In another advisory last January 8, Tacandong warned against 46 kinds of Chinese-made sex products that were found to have been smuggled into the country.
She said their inspectors found these unregistered products in the Him Guan Drugstore last November 12.
