MANILA, Philippines?The Ilocos region police office on Tuesday formed an investigating team to look into Monday?s ambush on a convoy of a mayoral candidate in Dingras, Ilocos Norte.
Chief Supt. Ramon Gatan, regional police director, ordered Ilocos Norte police director Senior Supt. Benjamin Lusad to head the Special Investigation Task Group ?Diego? to immediately resolve the ambush which left a village chair dead and four others wounded.
Gatan also assigned Senior Supt. Alejandro Valerio Jr., chief of the 1st Regional Public Safety Management Battalion, to help in the police operations.
?We expect to obtain more information relative to the case shortly and we will give regular updates to the media on the developments of this case,? Gatan said in a statement.
The four-vehicle convoy of mayoral candidate Joefrey Saguid was on its way home after attending a Christmas party in Barangay Bagut when unidentified men waylaid them around 1 a.m. Monday
Village chair Joen Caniete, 36, who was eyeing a seat in the town council, died while being wheeled into a hospital.
Hurt during the attack were councilor Jimboy Albanao, board member Robert Castro, SPO2 Cesar Sabado and PO1 Joel Natividad.
Police have yet to determine the motive in the attack.
