MANILA, Philippines ? A shipment of 4,000 precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines, which will be used in the May 2010 elections, has arrived in the Manila Port Area, Commission on Elections Chairman Jose Melo announced.
Melo said another batch of 3,200 units will arrive at 4 a.m. Wednesday.
"These shipments comprise about 10 percent of what we will need [nationwide]. Altogether, there will be between five to six tests before they will be delivered [to the areas where they will be used]," he said Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the equipment arrived Monday night.
Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal said field tests, including a mock election, were imperative before the necessary software could be installed into the machines.
