MANILA, Philippines ? Militant group Bayan (Bagong Alyansang Makabayan) on Monday condemned President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo?s plan to run for a congressional seat in her home province of Pampanga.
?We maintain that after nine years in Malacanang, with a rule that has been characterized by shameless corruption and impunity, Arroyo is no longer morally qualified to hold any public office,? said Bayan Secretary General Renato Reyes, Jr. in a statement.
Reyes said that Arroyo?s congressional bid is her attempt to evade accountability for crimes attributed to her family and regime.
Among the controversies linked with Arroyo and the First Family are the botched ZTE-NBN deal, the Manila North Rail Project, extrajudicial killings of militant leaders and journalists, and the ?Hello Garci? 2004 electoral fraud.
?This is a dark day for the Philippines. Her running for Congress is a slap on the face of the many victims of her administration. Her running for Congress is proof that she wants to somehow prolong her reign of terror,? Reyes added.
The militant spokesman also criticized Arroyo for ?prioritizing her political ambition? instead of addressing the situation in Maguindanao where at least 64 persons, including journalists, were massacred last November 23.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Bayan Muna (People First) party list representative Teddy Casiño said that Arroyo should seek ?professional help? since she is ?drunk with power.?
?I have never seen a leader so obsessed with power who, after nine years [of] occupying the highest office of the land, would still aspire for a lower position with her two sons and two in-laws,? Casiño said.
?She is drunk with power and can?t get enough. I think she needs professional help,? the militant lawmaker added.
Reports of Arroyo?s plan to run for Congress broke Monday in a taped interview aired via the government-run dzRB.
