MANILA, Philippines—Among the presidential aspirants, only Senators Richard Gordon and Ma. Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal’s political plans are still unknown—even to their own staff members.
Both Gordon and Madrigal are eligible for reelection but they had also declared an interest to seek higher office.
“I will not run blindly,” said Gordon, when interviewed by phone on Saturday. But definitely, he added, he has not backed out of the presidential race.
His ad, highlighted by the slogan, “Go na tayo (Let’s go),” is being aired on TV.
A member of Gordon’s inner circle said the senator was holding talks with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando about a possible team-up.
Gordon’s lips are sealed at the moment “because there are certain things that are being considered that he thinks will benefit the nation,” said a Gordon confidant, who asked not to identified on the record.
“We don't know his plans. If he does run, he will offer a very, very clear choice to the nation,” claimed the confidant.
Asked if he was getting Fernando as his running mate, Gordon said: “No comment.”
Gordon, an independent senator, said next year’s election would be the “most important election in the country.”
“The country is running amuck with people killing to get away with (the law).... People steal with impunity. You can include all the past and present presidents, and nothing has charged,” he charged.
If he did run for president, he would provide the electorate with "genuine change," he said.
“I don’t have resources. But I will have enough to go on. I will make my decision at the proper time. I still have until Tuesday,” he said.
“I will run … if I can prove that (I can provide) a choice for the electorate and it is a very clear move towards greatness in our country,” he said, stressing that his candidacy, if ever, would center on restoring dignity to every Filipino.
Unknown to many, Madrigal declared her presidential bid on July 31.
But news of her initial decision to seek the highest elective office in the land was largely drowned out by news about the sudden death of former President Corazon Aquino.
She is expected to file her candidacy on Sunday, but members of her staff said they have not been informed what position she will contest in 2010.
“She is running, but we don’t know yet for what position,” said a staff member, who also asked not to be identified.
