MANILA, Philippines -- The man, who pursued Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to run for president, is his 10th senatorial bet in 2010, Aquino’s campaign manager, Florencio “Butch’ Abad confirmed on Friday.
Abad said the inclusion of Alex Lacson, organizer of “Tuloy Pnoy Movement” into Aquino’s slate was formalized Wednesday.
“Yes, just two days ago,” he said in a text message when asked to confirm about Lacson’s entry into the ticket.
Lacson’s entry would bring the number of Aquino’s senatorial bets to 10, still short of two to complete the list.
A source from Aquino’s camp said, the remaining slots will go to either Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio, Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca or Grace Poe, daughter of the late Fernando Poe Jr.
Aquino’s other senatorial bets are former Senators Sergio Osmena III, Franklin Drilon, and Ralph Recto, Muntinlupa Representative Rufino Biazon, Bukidnon Rep. Teofisto Guingona III, Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros, former Bukidnon congressman Nereus Acosta, detained Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, and Sonia Roco.
The group continues to carry Osmena’s name even after his departure because of his strong opposition to Recto’s inclusion in the slate.
Lacson’s entry in the slate was not welcomed by Aquino’s rabid supporter, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“In fairness to him (Lacson), he’s a great supporter of Noynoy. But there seems to be some self-promotion in his actions,” said the source over the phone.
The source surmised that Lacson was accommodated by the group “just to keep the civil society quiet” in response to Recto’s entry into the slate.
“It’s a balancing act because the civil society was unhappy at the inclusion of Recto because mainly of his ties with Arroyo. But in the interest of those supportive of Noynoy and Mar, if that’s the dictate that comes from the party, they still have to understand this,” the source added.
Asked about Lacson’s chances in the upcoming elections, the source said, “One needs to know that miracles can happen.”
Before this development, a statement from Pinoy Power Movement was issued Thursday pushing the senatorial bids of Lacson and singer Jim Paredes.
Pinoy Power convenors JJ Soriano and Mae Paner said both Lacson and Paredes can anchor the senatorial ticket of Aquino “to the virtues of non-traditional politics.”
“We need new faces that are also highly-qualified,” said Paner, who is also known as “Juana Change.”
“Lacson and Paredes both have the nation’s best interest in mind and they definitely aren’t trapos (traditional politicians),” she added.
