Former rebel convinces rebel-brother to surrender

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna ? A member of the communist New People's Army (NPA) in Mindoro Oriental was convinced by his brother, a rebel returnee, to surrender to the authorities, a police official said on Thursday.

A report from Chief Supt. Paul Mascariñas, police regional director for Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), said 19-year-old Giovanni Mariano Gala, alias "Ka Jasper," voluntarily turned himself in Monday afternoon.

Gala surrendered to Mayor Ernilo Villas of Bulalacao town and the local police officials.

Mascariñas said Gala's brother, a former member of the rebel army, convinced him to leave the armed movement.
