MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has warned local governments and concerned government agencies to institute measures against the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, which is characterized by extreme temperature rise with little rainfall.
In an advisory, Pagasa said that despite three typhoons hitting Luzon in the past month, “below normal rainfall conditions” were experienced in some areas in the Visayas and Mindanao.
The agency noted that provinces in Southern Leyte, Agusan Del Norte, and Surigao Del Norte experienced way-below normal rainfall conditions. Rainfall deficiencies for the past three consecutive months were also experienced in the provinces of Bohol, Capiz, and Misamis Oriental.
Pagasa said this was the result of the initial impact of the current El Niño condition.
“Rainfall conditions in November are expected to be below normal in most parts of Luzon and Visayas including some areas of southern Mindanao,” Pagasa said.
It added that Metro Manila, Mindoro, and most parts of Mindanao will likely experience near normal rainfall conditions for the same period.
“All concerned government agencies are advised to continue to take appropriate measures to mitigate the potential adverse impacts of El Niño on various sectors of the society.”
