MANILA, Philippines? The death toll from two devastating storms in the Philippines rose to 773 on Friday after more bodies were unearthed from landslide-ravaged communities in the north of the country, the government said.

The number of people confirmed killed by Tropical Storm Pepeng (international codename: Parma) rose to 419, up from 375 in the previous count, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said in a statement.

Most the fatalities were from mountain communities struck by landslides in the north of the main island of Luzon, as the storm hovered for a week after arriving as a typhoon on October 3.

The government also lifted the toll from Tropical Storm Ondoy (Ketsana), which dumped the heaviest day of rain in more than four decades on Manila on September 26, to 354 dead, from the previous day's tally of 337.

Eighty-eight other people are listed missing feared dead from both storms, and about 288,000 others are still sheltering in temporary evacuation camps after their homes were flooded or destroyed.
