MANILA, Philippines—College students who have done volunteer work in helping the victims of storm Ondoy (international codename: Ketsana) deserve extra credits in class, a lawmaker proposed on Friday.
Muntinlupa Representative Rufino Biazon said the student volunteers could earn extra credits in their National Service Training Program (NSTP).
“The work they have done to help in the relief efforts are more than enough to earn credits in their NSTP or CMT classes,” he said.
Biazon urged the Commission on Higher Education and management of colleges and universities to study the mechanism for granting the incentives.
“A mechanism should be set up to record their volunteer work to be submitted to their schools for credit,” he said.
Students in various universities have organized their fund drive to help flood victims mostly in Metro Manila. Some students have also volunteered to organizations or government agencies to repack and distribute relief items.
