MANILA, Philippines? The Philippine National Police is gearing for ?pre-emptive? evacuations of residents who will be directly affected by typhoon Pepeng (international codename: Parma), which is expected to hit land Saturday.

Chief Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome of the police community relations group said on Friday that regional and provincial disaster coordinating councils in the affected areas of Pepeng have been alerted to conduct evacuations ?as needed.?

?We will initially ask them to evacuate to safer grounds. But in case of danger, the PNP will be forced to enforce its police power to ensure the safety of residents. We will force them to evacuate,? Bartolome added.

Respective officials in Regions 1 to 5 and Metro Manila have been informed of this directive, Bartolome said.

Apart from pre-emptive evacuations, the PNP is already assisting local officials in cleaning and readying evacuation centers in different regions.

?We are also conducting an inventory of our assets and resources to help in the rescue operations,? Bartolome said, referring to rescue trucks, boats, and other emergency equipment.

At this time, the PNP is still helping in providing relief goods to affected residents in Metro Manila.

Bartolome said that authorities would now shift to a door-to-door approach in delivering relief goods to make the distribution more orderly.

He also appealed to victims not to mob trucks and cars carrying relief goods, or to harass its drivers.

?Pag may relief goods, ?wag abalahin o harangin. Iwasan din nating mambato (If there are relief goods, don?t interrupt them or stop them. Let?s also avoid hurling stones),? Bartolome said.
