MANILA, Philippines -- The House of Representatives will study the re-imposition of the death penalty against illegal drug traffickers, Speaker Prospero Nograles said on Monday, in the wake of reports that an anti-narcotics agent?s daughter was kidnapped and raped.
Nograles said he was ?inclined? to look at the proposal ?very closely? as he declared an all-out war against the illegal drug trade. He said capital punishment could also cover other heinous crimes such as terrorist bombings.
?There are even proposals now that ibalik yung death penalty as far as drugs are concerned, so yan pag-aaralan din natin yan [to re-impose the death penalty as far as drug cases are concerned, we will study that]. That might be an option,? he said in an interview after a forum in Manila.
?Although there is no more death penalty, the House may consider that proposal. It has to be an all out war against drugs and we can?t treat them with kid gloves anymore,? he said.
The Speaker said he was not in favor of the proposal but was ?inclined to study that proposition very closely.?
?In other words, let?s define certain crimes that we can probably re-impose the death penalty,? he said.
Nograles urged the government, especially Dangerous Drugs Board Chairman Vicente Sotto III, to get its act together to address the drug problem.
