Gun club supports gov’t amnesty campaign

MANILA, Philippines -- The Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers (AFAD) on Friday offered to assist the Philippine National Police on the upcoming gun amnesty campaign in October, its president said.

Lawyer Hector Rodriguez said that AFAD could help in information dissemination, particularly to its members whose gun licenses have expired.

"The association can assist the government in the campaign by promoting the renewal of expired licenses. The government cannot do this alone. The association has members and sales offices in almost all cities and has better reach," he said.

Apart from that, AFAD can also coordinate with gun clubs under them to help in the campaign, such as distributing posters and flyers, posting radio and television advertisements, among others, Rodriguez said.

Meanwhile, Philippine National Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Leonardo Espina said the national police would be able to lower the number of loose firearms and expired gun licenses despite having only a one-month gun amnesty.

Other gun amnesties usually lasted for four months.

Espina said their more than 1,600 police stations would be able to handle the influx of gun owners nationwide.

Part of AFAD's information campaign on responsible gun ownership includes the upcoming Defense and Sporting Arms Show from July 16 to 20 at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, Rodriguez said.
