MANILA, Philippines? The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has ordered a ban on all products containing the chemical dimethyl fumarate (DMF), a fungicide found in various leather products, after reported health risks brought by the chemical to the public.
Secretary Ronaldo Puno ordered all local officials to ensure that all leather products, including furniture and footwear, are DMF-free, after the European Union ordered a ban on all products containing the chemical.
DMF is as a fungicide to protect against molds that may cause leather products to deteriorate during storage, transit, or everyday usage in a humid climate. It is contained in a sachet similar to those that contain silica gel, a non-harmful desiccant (drying ingredient) frequently used in leather products.
?If already in the market, these products have to be recalled and withdrawn without delay, and consumers have to be informed about the serious risk,? Puno said.
He has also directed all local officials to conduct massive information campaign on the signs and symptoms of the health risks relating to DMF.
Some of the health risks include severe allergic reactions, including skin itching, irritation, redness, and burns and in some cases, acute respiratory difficulties.
