MANILA, Philippines -- Hostilities between militant partylist representatives and anti-communist groups spilled on the session hall of the House of Representatives Wednesday with an exchange of fiery speeches.
Representative Jun Alcover of the Alliance for Nationalism and Democracy (ANAD), an anti-communist organization, took the floor and lambasted militant partylist representatives for not denouncing communism, which he said terrorized a number people especially in the countryside.
Prior to this, Anakpawis Representative Joel Maglunsod and Bayan Muna Representative Satur Ocampo denounced the military for including several of their partylist colleagues in its purported order of battle.
Alcover then accused Ocampo and other partylist representatives of being implicated in a number of cases of killings perpetrated by the New People?s Army.
Ocampo, who was a former spokesman for the National Democratic Front before he joined mainstream politics, said all cases against him have been quashed by the Supreme Court.
A fired up Alcover challenged Ocampo and his colleagues to ?denounce communism? to show they are not part of the movement.
Because of the heated situation, session was suspended. Speaker Prospero Nograles approached Alcover and patted him on the back.
?Nag-overheat (It overheated),? Nograles was heard telling other congressmen. ?I told him, wag masyadong mainit ang ulo (don't be such a hot head).?
Bantay partylist Representative Jovito Palparan, another nemesis of the militant partylist solons, approached Alcover for a brief conversation.
When session resumed, Gabriela partylist Representative Liza Maza took the floor and said that the charges mentioned by Alcover were old cases and trumped up charges against Ocampo.
?If he is not satisfied with the decision of the Supreme Court, then let him show proof. Let him prove his accusations, if he can?t prove his accusations, then shut up and shut up now,? Maza said.
After her statement, the session was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
