MANILA, Philippines – Las Piñas Representative Cynthia Villar held on to her title as the richest and only billionaire member of the House of Representatives.
Anakpawis Representative Rafael Mariano was the poorest congressman with a net worth of P55,501.72. Several partylist lawmakers join also ranked among the most indigent members of the House.
According to Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net (SALN) Worth of House members as of December 31, 2008, the Las Piñas lawmaker, wife of Senator Manuel Villar and a businesswoman, declared P1,046,651,683.00 in assets and no liabilities.
The SALN covered the declaration of a total of 238 legislators.
Banker and lawyer Ferdinand Martin Romualdez of Leyte’s first district is the second richest with P477,205,715.59 in assets. He also has no liabilities. In third place is Negros Occidental Representative Julio Ledesma IV, a businessman, with P571,979,000.00 in assets, and P124,450,000 in liabilities; followed by San Jose del Monte Representative Arturo Robes, a businessman, with P474,173,000 in assets and P33,004,000 in liabilities; and Iloilo Representative Judy Syjuco with P278,018,870 in assets and P12,500,000 in liabilities.
The three Arroyos in Congress – Ignacio Arroyo of Negros Occidental, the brother of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo, and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s sons, Juan Miguel Arroyo of Pampanga and Diosdado Arroyo of Camarines Sur – are among the top 30 richest House members.
Speaker Prospero Nograles is the 29th wealthiest congressman with P133,261,600 in assets and P45,000,000 in liabilities.
The 10 poorest congressmen are: Mariano, Bayan Muna partylist Representative Teodoro Casino (P208,900 assets, P90,000 liabilities); Bohol Representative Adam Relson Jala (P782,000 assets, no liabilities); Bayan Muna partylist Representative Satur Ocampo (P895,145.51 assets, no liabilities); Anak Mindanao partylist Representative Mujiv Hataman (P2,180,000 assets, P700,000 liabilities); Gabriela partylist Representative Liza Maza (P1,819,000 assets, P290,000 liabilities); Manila Representative Benjamin Asilo (P2,980,000 assets, P1,029,000 liabilities); Bulacan Representative Pedro Pancho (P2,000,000 assets, no liabilities); Western Samar Representative Sharee Ann Tan (P2,100,000 assets, no liabilities); and Alliance of Rural Concerns party list Representative Narciso Santiago III (P2,900,000 assets, no liabilities).
