Dehydrated Lozada rushed to hospital

MANILA, Philippines?Whistle-blower Rodolfo ?Jun? Lozada, who has been detained for a week at a cell in the Manila Police District headquarters, was rushed to a nearby hospital after suffering from dehydration and a drop in his oxygen level, his family and supporters said early Wednesday.

Lozada felt weak after being detained in a cramped area in the Detective Jail Management Section of the MPD, his brother Owe and Black and White Movement's Leah Navarro said.

"Docs from Manila Hospital were called to look in on Jun Lozada at MPD Jail. He felt weak," said Navarro in a text message.

She added that Lozada will spend the night at the hospital to undergo rehydration, with doctors expected to conduct further tests. Navarro said Lozada will also need complete bed rest and will not be accepting visitors.

It was Lozada who blew the whistle in the anomalous telecommunications deal that supposedly involved First Gentlemen Jose Miguel Arroyo and former Commission on Elections Chair Benjamin Abalos.

Lozada was arrested Wednesday last week at the La Salle Greenhills, where he and his family have been seeking refuge since February last year when he testified and implicated Arroyo in the $329-million national broadband network deal with China's ZTE Corp.

His arrest came after a court issued a warrant for his arrest for the perjury charges filed against him by former Presidential Chief of Staff Mike Defensor for issuing a statement that the former Palace official forced him to lie that he was kidnapped upon his arrival at the airport from Hong Kong in February 2008.

A P6,000 bail had been recommended by the court for his conditional release but Lozada has refused to post bail.
