MANILA, Philippines -- Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago has apologized for her outburst Monday over jurisdiction of the chamber?s inquiry into the World Bank ban on three Filipino construction firms for alleged corruption.
?I have made peace with Sen. [Francis] ?Kiko? Pangilinan? He did not know that I am the chair [of the economic affairs committee]. It was not even directed [at] me personally and, therefore, I apologize because I acted on a mistake of fact,? Santiago told reporters on Tuesday.
Santiago was referring to Pangilinan?s motion on Monday that a resolution to investigate the World Bank ban be referred to other committees instead of economic affairs.
After delivering a privilege speech, Santiago staged a walk out of the session hall and threatened to resign from the Senate.
But on Tuesday, Santiago said she would not only apologize to Pangilinan but also to other senators who felt alluded to by her speech.
?I?m going to go around the rest of the senators [and ask] if they felt alluded to yesterday so that I can apologize to them,? she said.
?I think that maybe I can, if what I did was unforgivable, losing my temper in public, maybe I could be credited with the fact that I take the problem of corruption very, very seriously. It really plunges me sometimes into despair to realize how difficult it is to fight corruption especially at the highest levels of government,? she said.
She also apologized to media.
?I hope you will forgive me as well if I have been extravagant or if I have exceeded certain limits. It is only because of my desire to stop corruption, and I am happy that the media has always supported me,? Santiago said.
Pangilinan confirmed that Santiago had apologized to him.
?Yes that?s true. Nagkausap na kami [We have talked]. She apologized for her outburst yesterday and explained that she was very frustrated about corruption. I said I could understand her frustration,? Pangilinan said.
