MANILA, Philippines? At least two solons are warm to the idea of Chief Justice Reynato Puno running for the highest post in the land.
"He is qualified just like most of the emerging candidates. But he needs to improve on his political savvy to win mass support and good understanding of the economy, security, peace and order, environment, poverty and science and technology,'' said Parañaque Representative Roilo Golez.
Nueva Ecija Representative Joson said Puno was qualified to run for President although some would likely scrutinize his record in the judiciary to determine whether he has made a broad impact.
"Even as an alternative candidate, Puno will have to get a political machinery and funds to back his candidacy,'' said Joson.
Earlier, Senator Panfilo Lacson said he would sacrifice his ambitions in 2010 to give way to Puno because he could be the "beacon that moral forces are looking for as a leader of the nation.''
Despite denials by members of Congress, Joson reckoned the planned impeachment plan against Puno was real.
Joson said Lakas would be the key to mounting a successful impeachment complaint.
"As long as all of Lakas agrees, and the President gives the go-signal, Chief Justice can be impeached but I doubt if a two-thirds vote will be obtained in the Senate,'' said Joson.
