MANILA, Philippines -- Is there a relationship between crime prevention and police uniforms?
The Philippine National Police (PNP) seems to think so as it launched its new line of police uniforms on Monday, promising to make fighting crime easier for Metro Manila?s policemen.
Some 400 policemen in the metropolis were given the new police patrol uniforms at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City by National Capital Region police office (NCRPO) Director Leopoldo Bataoil.
The new police patrol uniforms are light blue polo shirts embroidered with the PNP insignia and with the name, rank, and designation of the policeman. The word ?PULIS? is embroidered on the back with yellow thread.
?When the time comes to chase criminal elements, it is very convenient, they become very flexible. Which is why we highly recommend that henceforth, this uniform will be worn by the policeman, especially the beat patrollers,? Bataoil said.
?They will finds it easier to walk, it is more comfortable than the former uniform. When they are chasing, they can run faster, because our [old] uniforms had too many attachments,? Director German Doria of the police community relations group said.
The new police patrol uniforms come with a standard whistle, cap, and leather shoes.
The detailed embroidery on the new patrol uniforms will also make it difficult for syndicates to duplicate these for us in staging robberies as some have done in the past, Bataoil said.
But he stressed that vigilance, both of policemen and the citizenry, remains the crucial factor in detecting real policemen from fake.
The new police patrol uniforms will initially be used by policemen in Metro Manila, but will eventually be used in other police regional offices as well, Doria said.
