PNP: No anomaly in P3M legal aid

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday again denied allegations of anomaly in a P3-million legal aid fund for policemen after a group questioned the purpose of the funding.

The Alay sa Filipino [Offering to the Filipino] Foundation, headed by Aida Sy, questioned why PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa approved the P3-million fund and tapped a private law firm to handle the cases of policemen who could not be promoted because of pending administrative cases when the PNP has an existing internal legal office.

But PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome and Deputy Director General Ismael Rafanan, deputy chief for operations, denied that the money would go to a private firm.

“PNP lawyers themselves are giving assistance to our policemen who are facing service-related cases,” Bartolome said in an interview.

“We did not hire private lawyers. [The P3 million] will be used by our lawyers to defend our policemen,” Rafanan said, adding that the PNP is prohibited by law from hiring private lawyers.

Both officials also said only P100,000 of the fund has been used so far to purchase equipment such as computers for their secretariat.

“So the P3 million they say is missing or is anomalous is not true. The funds are there,” Bartolome said.
