Enrile not going to push Charter change

MANILA, Philippines -- "I am not going to push for Cha-Cha," Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile reiterated Thursday.

Enrile gave this statement amid persistent speculations that his elevation to the Senate presidency would pave the way for the revival of the Charter change initiative by the administration.

An ardent advocate of Charter change, the newly-installed Senate President assured that he would not use his position to serve and favor any person.

"I'm in favor of amending the Constitution not for myself, not to serve my interest but to serve the interest of the country, to solve the problems of the country -- not to serve the interest of any particular person or politician. And I never hide that fact," Enrile said.

"To say that I'm going to use my position to push through the change in the Constitution to favor any particular person or any particular group, that is not going to happen. I will not do that," he said.

"I'm not a lacky or errand boy or servant of anyone in this country. I serve my own self, according to my best right and my conscience...," he further said.
