MANILA, Philippines -- Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile has assured his predecessor, Senator Manny Villar, that he would be given "every opportunity to defend himself" over his alleged involvement in the C-5 road project controversy.

Enrile made the assurance on Thursday as he announced the decision of the majority bloc in the Senate to elect Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson as head of the ethics committee.

The committee presently being headed by Senator Pia Cayetano is handling the ethics case against Villar.

"He [Villar] will be given every opportunity to defend himself," Enrile said over radio.

"All that I will require will be fairness and respect for the dignity of the people who will appear in the investigation," he said.
