MANILA, Philippines -- United States president-elect Barack Obama assured President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of continuing "good relations" between their respective countries when he finally called her up before dawn on Tuesday, Malacañang said.
Obama spoke with Arroyo on the phone at around 3:17 a.m., returning two congratulatory phone messages she had sent earlier, Press Secretary Jesus Dureza told a news conference at the Palace.
Along with Arroyo, Obama also called up the leaders of Georgia and Turkey, Dureza said.
"Yes, there was a call…What was the subject of the call? [It's] more of a reassurance of the President-elect about continuing good relations and cooperation that can take place between the Philippines and the United States," Dureza said.
Dureza could not say how long the phone conversation between the two leaders was.
