MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Jesus Verzosa said he and his wife are ready to undergo the lifestyle check recommended by the National Police Commission (Napolcom) for the members of a top-level police delegation to Russia last month.
At a press conference Tuesday, the Napolcom ad hoc committee released its initial report and recommendations on the ongoing investigation into the multi-million peso cash advances drawn by senior police officers led by retired general Eliseo de la Paz.
One of the recommendations was for lifestyle checks on the members of the PNP delegation to the Interpol Assembly in St. Petersburg, Russia, including Verzosa's wife, and "any private individual who may later be found in conspiracy with the erring delegate."
The trip to Russia became controversial when Russian customs authorities accosted Dela Paz at the Moscow airport with P6.9 million worth of euros.
Napolcom vice chairman Eduardo Escueta said the private individual clause covered Tyrone Ng Arejola, who supposedly asked De la Paz to buy wristwatches with 45,000 euros.
The retirement benefits of De la Paz and former police director Jaime Caringal have also been withheld pending the resolution of the issue, said Napolcom chair and Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno.
