Get rid of ‘monster,’ St. Luke’s urged

MANILA, Philippines -- Several youth groups held a protest at St. Luke's Medical Center (SLMC) in Quezon City Friday, as they called on former agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn “Joc-Joc” Bolante to tell the truth in the P728-million fertilizer funds, which he allegedly diverted to the campaign kitty of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the 2004 polls.

Vencer Crisostomo, League of Filipino Students chairman, also urged the SLMC to "get rid of a monster" confined there.

“To Joc-Joc, tell the truth, if not, you will be haunted on November 1 and 2 by the ghosts of protests by the people…don’t hide the secrets inside St. Luke’s,” said Crisostomo in Filipino.

"To St. Luke’s, you have a monster inside and it has to be exorcised because there might be more of them,” he said.

Aside from the LFS, youth group Anakbayan was also present in the protest. They were shortly dispersed by SLMC guards.

Bolante was brought to the SLMC Tuesday night for chest pains, following his arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport from the United States where he failed to get political asylum.

On Wednesday, Bolante's doctor, Dr. Romeo Saavedra told a press conference that Bolante was in stable condition but there was a "significant narrowing" and hardening of his blood vessels that would require further tests.

He added that Bolante, who also has a history of peptic ulcer, must not be subjected to stress.
