ABS-CBN hit for MILF commander interview

MANILA, Philippines?Representative Abdullah "Bobby'' Dimaporo blasted the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. on Tuesday for what he called "one-sided reporting'' in its interview with Moro Islamic Liberation Front commander Abdullah Macapaar alias "Commander Bravo'' Monday night.

"Commander Bravo, who is held responsible for the killing of old men, women and children, was interviewed and he aired his side, but when our soldiers or commanders accomplished noble things, they were not interviewed,'' said Dimaporo in a statement.

In the TV interview, Bravo blamed the government's failure to push through with the memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain for the escalation of hostilities in Mindanao.

Bravo admitted to raiding Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte, last August 18. He claimed that his troops did not kill civilians, which was forbidden under Islam, but suggested that some of them might have been caught in the crossfire between his troops and the military.

He also blamed forces of his former sub-commander, Alvin Cuntu, for instigating the killing spree in Lapayan, Kauswagan. These atrocities had been unfairly blamed on his troops, he said.

But Dimaporo disputed Bravo's claims and insisted that the MILF leader was "responsible for the killing of innocent civilians and for burning their houses in our province.''

Dimaporo suggested that instead of attacking civilians, Bravo should have just attacked posts of the military or police, who could fight back.

Dimaporo said ABC-CBN betrayed its pursuit of money by sensationalizing the news, in place of the search for truth.

For Dimaporo, it appeared that ABS-CBN, already rich with billions of pesos being one of the top two networks in the country, has not learned its lesson from the kidnapping of its news crew led by Ces Drilon. "Instead, they continued to air the bandits' pronouncements against the government,'' said Dimaporo in a statement.

He urged media to be more discerning in assessing the worth of news, warning that giving "criminals or bandits" publicity would make them "proud and arrogant" and create the impression that their "unlawful and vicious acts" were somehow acceptable.
