MANILA, Philippines?(UPDATE) Health authorities were more upbeat that the country was generally spared from tainted milk from China after the Bureau of Food and Drugs cleared 41 more China-made dairy products of melamine contamination.

All 41 products, including chocolate and cookie products, tested negative for melamine in the fourth round of tests conducted by the country?s food and drugs regulatory body.

So far out of 113 locally available dairy products tested, three turned out to be tainted with the industrial chemical melamine, an industrial chemical which damages the kidneys when ingested.

These are Greenfood Yili Fresh Milk and Mengniu Drink, both of which come in packages with Chinese characters, and Jolly Cow Slender High Calcium Low Fat Milk 1 liter.

The BFAD released its latest findings in newspaper ads, including the Philippine Daily Inqurier, on Tuesday.

"It shows the Philippines is not that affected by melamine (contamination)," Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said when reached by telephone.

"We hope it will only become better," he also said.

BFAD would continue to run its tests on other dairy products.

Last week, BFAD officials said they would also validate the findings made by Qualibet Testing Center in Quezon City.

The privately-owned testing firm said their tests found the chemical in two milk candies, a chocolate brand, a milk powder for pregnant women, a repackaged coffee creamer used in restaurants, a luncheon meat brand and a corned beef brand.

Melamine-contaminated milk has killed at least four babies and sickened over 54,000 others in China in the worst tainted food scandal to hit socialist republic.

The scandal has prompted a worldwide recall of Chinese dairy products.

The 41 products cleared of melamine are:

1. Anchor Fresh Milk

Duque earlier said BFAD could test other China-made food products after it has completed its tests on dairy products.

Meanwhile supermarket owners could resume selling those milk and milk-related products cleared by BFAD, Duque said Tuesday.

"They can put these products back to their shelves, but traders must make sure these products are registered (with BFAD)," he said.

The melamine-tainted Greenfood Yili Fresh Milk and Mengniu Drink were not registered with BFAD, which meant they were smuggled into the country.

The other tainted product, Jolly Cow Slender High Calcium Low Fat Milk, had a registered distributor, Fly Ace Corporation.

But BFAD officials could not say whether the product itself, Jolly Cow Slender was registered.

BFAD director Leticia Gutierrez could not be reached for comment Tuesday. Her staff said she was attending the Asean health ministers' conference in Pasay City.
