MANILA -- Saying that he is still waiting for a sign from God, Jesus Is Lord Church founder Eddie Villanueva has yet to decide whether to run for president in the 2010 elections.
“I must confess that the presidency does not have any 'it' to me,” Villanueva said in a press conference on Sunday during the group's 30th anniversary.
Villanueva said he was not saying yes or no, but he was only at the disposal of God.
“If the situation arises, and God reveals to me that I should lead (the country), then there is the possibility that I might entertain the thought of running,” Villanueva said.
He, however, added with a laugh, “But I do hope that God says no.”
The JIL leader also disclosed during the news briefing that representatives from four major political camps had approached officials of Villanueva's Bangon Pilipino Movement to ask for support.
“However, we are not ready to name them yet, nor reveal the people we are going to support in the 2010 elections,” Villanueva said.
The JIL founder said that his Church has been at the forefront of national crusades for truth, justice and righteousness in the last three decades.
“It is a mistake to confine the Church within the bounds of the spiritual and moral arena, although these are primordial in her ecclesiastical duties to the people,” Villanueva said.
Villanueva lamented that looking for positive changes in the wrong places led to disappointments for him.
“It is hard to change those who don't want to change. This is the reason why any shot at national transformation, without personal regeneration, is impossible,” he pointed out.
He added that he found it disgraceful how the Philippines has been claiming to be the only Christian nation in Asia, and yet it remained to be the number one corrupt country in the region.
“I don't know why we are even silently taking all these perversions sitting down. This should have been a cause for national outrage a long time ago,” Villanueva said.
He also said the sector of the Church has been focusing on evangelization and forgetting transformational ministry.
“This gross negligence (on the part of the church) is the reason behind the millions of people still languishing in abject poverty in the country,” Villanueva said.
