MANILA, Philippines -- It’s room 2010 at the President Tower Residences in Quezon City for opposition Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero.
Escudero confirmed that he has an office with room number 2010 at the President Tower but played coy about his plan in 2010.
“Nagkataon lang po [It just so happens],” said the neophyte senator when asked if this was in preparation for the 2010 elections.
Escudero and his partymate in the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Senator Loren Legarda, are both said to be eyeing the presidency.
But for Zamboanga del Sur Representative Antonio Cerilles, another NPC member, Escudero was clearly trying to send a message with his choice of room number and location.
“Really? I didn’t know that. Siguro [Maybe] he has his own vision, he has his own timetable. Baka may meaning yun [There might be a meaning to it],” Cerilles said over the phone.
“Sa NPC, expected siya na mag-aspire [In NPC, he is expected to aspire] for either president or vice president. He ranked number 2 in the last senatorial election and if I were Chiz, I’d also dream to be the president or vice president. Normal lang yun [That’s normal]. I would also have that kind of confidence,” he said.
Also told about Escudero’s office, Speaker Prospero Nograles said, “That’s a good sign for my friend Chiz. Also his [Escudero] birthday is 10, 10, 10. Maybe another “barracks.” Escudero’s birthday is October 10.
Nograles, also president of the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, admitted that he was trying to get either Escudero or Legarda to be the party’s standard-bearer.
“I am reaching out to everyone, [including] Chiz and Loren,” he said.
